took me a long time

I was the life of the party for years - to me that meant being able to drink anybody under the table. It took facing the end of my marriage and the breakup of my family to find sustained sobriety.

I didn't do a twelve-step program - whose members will tell you attaining sobriety without their help is impossible. I did it purely out of an act of will. The longer I went sober the more I enjoyed it - and I found I could be much more productive and make a lot more money.

I found that I had more time to do things - so I found ways to turn that time into making money.

After a year and a half of sobriety I've begun drinking beer at social events and have not taken the road into belligerent, overtly drunk episodes. Twelve-steppers will tell you that's impossible - hasn't been long enough for me to make the claim that it isn't but so far, so good.
